Sea tulip is the common name for some varieties of sea squirts, and the name comes from their bulb-like shape and resemblance to the flower.
While searching for some references I learnt that Spotted Handfish often lay their eggs around the base of sea tulips and so I just had to include one!
Handfish have always fascinated me, they are kind of dorky with their big fins that they prefer to ‘walk’ on, instead of swimming.
Spotted Handfish have been around for about 50 millions years and despite outliving dinosaurs they are now critically endangered.
